The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is about the interconnectedness between people, place, memory, and story. Drawing upon the natural world, our production of Edward Tulane illustrates these connections through forces more significant than one individual – the moon, ocean, and stars. Together, these represent the vastness of the universe, cyclical patterns, and ebbs and flows.
Edward Tulane is a beloved childhood story and these forces often appear in books, plays, and poetry. Metaphors and images of the moon, ocean, and stars describe love and longing, deep dreams, and the unfathomable nature of emotions. Throughout Edward’s journey, these elements reflect his growing understanding of love, hope, and vulnerability. The moon embodies Edward’s desire for connection and ability to reflect; the sea, the depths of change and vast unknown spaces he must navigate; and the stars, the enduring hope that grounds and guides him.
As you watch Emerson College’s production of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, consider your relationship with the moon, sea, and stars, literally and metaphorically. What are the ever-present forces in your life that make you reflect, help you connect, push you towards change, and guide you home?
Edward Tulane is a china rabbit, gifted to a young girl named Abilene for her birthday. He does not care for people, or anything for that matter, despite the love and attention he receives from her. When he is taken on an ocean voyage and accidentally thrown overboard, his journey of learning how to love begins.

The directing team of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane worked alongside the production’s education directors to organize Emerson Stage’s first relaxed performance during the performance week.
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was the annual Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) show for Emerson Stage’s 2024-2025 Season.
Relaxed Performance Model
What is a relaxed performance?
A relaxed performance offers accommodations for audience members to make a theater environment more inclusive without altering the content of the show.
For this production, the following adjustments were made:
The severity of sound and lighting cues were lessened.
The house lights in the theater remained on at a low level during the performance.
Audience members were given permission to move around and make noise during the performance.
A quiet area in the lobby was made accessible for those in need of a sensory break.
The following Social Story was curated to help prepare audience members for their theater experience:
